How do I know if my child needs grief support?

Children react to grief in various ways; some talk about the death of their person openly and often while others may not talk at all. Short term signs of grief include:

  • Nervousness
  • Nightmares or reoccurring dreams
  • Depression or withdrawal
  • Hyperactivity
  • Expressive anger or uncontrollable rages
  • Inability to concentrate (especially in school)
  • Over dependency on one person
  • Frequent illness

Without help, the effects of unresolved grief may continue for generations turning into chronic depression, difficulty maintaining relationships, eating disorders, substance abuse or an inability to find joy in life.

How does the service work?

Children and teens who come to Cork’s Place are put into grief groups separated by age – 3-6 year olds; 7-10 year olds; 11-13 year olds; 14-17 year olds. Each age group meets twice a month.

When children show up for their group they begin in the Group Circle Room. This room facilitates comfort in sharing and provides a place for transitioning into and out of the various activities. After beginning in the Group Circle Room, children are free to explore the other six activity rooms along with their assigned facilitator.

At Cork’s Place we believe no child or family should go through the stages of grief alone. Thanks in part to grants, fundraising events and individual contributions our services are offered to families within our community free of charge.

We do invite families to make a tax-deductible pledge of any amount so that we may continue to offer our services free of charge. To make a charitable donation to Cork’s Place, please visit our Donate Page.
